Retro Ruthie began with a love for vintage clothes but never finding things in my size. I had been collecting vintage sewing patterns and fabrics for years and would occasionally whip something up for a special occasion. It wasn’t until August of 2012 that I decided to bring along some items I had sewn up to a Tiki event I was vending at in San Diego, California.

It was there that I met the lovely Susana Clark of Vestige Photography. She loved the 50’s inspired tops and skirts I made and asked if she could snap a few pics and post on her Instagram. Well….within 15 minutes I had over 30 followers all loving the tops and asking how to order. I was completely in awe and flattered at the same time.  They were excited that something could be handcrafted, custom fitted and have the darling vintage vibe they all loved. Thanks Susana, I am forever grateful.

I soon out grew my tiny little sewing room at home and in Jan 2013 moved into a nice workshop space where I had room to spread out all my fabrics and patterns. With the help of my Mom, Lorraine….we were soon busy sewing up custom goodies.

I have always loved making handcrafted “stuff” as long as I can remember. I had been doing craft shows and vending vintage Aloha ware for years. I will still continue to bring the Retro Ruthie line on the road and vend at the events I have enjoyed over the years. Events will be posted here…so please let me know if you will be there, love to meet you!

The website will launch with six of my favorite essential pieces. I will be adding more items as time goes on and would love to hear from you with requests and ideas for future vintage inspired items. I want Retro Ruthie to be a shop that makes each item for each individual woman. I don’t want a “cookie cutter” business and only offer “what’s on the shelf”.

I encourage feedback and ideas….. I want to make what you want.

Please stay tuned.

XOXO

Denise
